A History Of Sleep – How We Got The Modern Mattress

When you think of a mattress, you may get pictures of a solid white rectangle with metal springs filled and topped with foam and cotton. Or of space age memory foam, latex mattresses, or other brand-new technology to think about sleep. But the mattress is not so for always. In fact, this modern mattresses are not all that long at all. Before, we slept on a variety of different surfaces and mattresses. Here's a glance on some of the mattresses in the past and how we got where we are today.

The first mattress pads or bags were a kind of supporting material. During the centuries, what went into the mattress has varied as the number of used mattresses. So many people – even affluent – have on the basis of clean straw, reeds or Corn husks slept, stuffed firmly sealed in a pocket. Poor people might only have these "straw tick," but richer cover their bases in Europe Mattresses with wool or feather beds -. thin mattresses, which softened the lower layered This could produce a really soft bed By. the eighteenth century, American and European people began to be used mostly on mattresses stuffed with wool or cotton. Poor people could have used straw, though.

Support for these mattresses tend to come in two types. You can either sleep on a flat platform style bed with slats to support mattress or support a rope, fabric or leather, that worked more like a hammock. It was not until the 19th Century, that the box spring was invented, and mattresses something less lumpy. This was the beginning of the modern bed as we know it, but the mattress was on top, was still much the same. Some of them now special stitching and were closer to the same shape as modern mattresses, but they were still full of the same materials.

It was not until the 1930s that the spring was spread. These mattresses contain metal springs inside a rectangular box filled with cotton or other filler and padding. Encased spring made it easier to sleep. During the Second World War were, in fact encouraged the families, their own mattress at home – do not dream something most of us today would. We are still with innerspring mattresses but they have much more complex – with artificial foams, special construction zones and all other types of innovations.

In the 1950s, the first foam mattresses and pillows were widespread, and in the 1960s, the waterbed was in existence. Memory foam was developed by NASA in the 1970s, but did not make it into consumer prices to use until the mid-1990s. Other foam mattresses and latex-like soy, have also become popular. Well, there are more options for sleep surfaces than has ever been, so everyone can get a good nights sleep!

Sambassadeur’s 2010 full-length, European, offers a refreshing departure from the band’s previous effort, Migration — an album that, while it was by no means bad, was ultimately a tad one-dimensional compared to Sambassadeur’s earlier work, thanks in large part to its glassy-smooth production (granted, it was pretty — but it worked to flatten out the album entirely). European can be seen as a meeting point between Migration and Sambassadeur’s earlier work: it takes the jangly, shambling warmth of the band’s self-titled debut and gives it a layer of glossy varnish. It also finds the group dipping into ’80s dance-pop and soft rock influences; there’s a good shake of campiness to be found on European. The result is an album with a windblown, cinematic feel. The production sounds practically dewy, something like the musical equivalent of a soft-focus lens; there are times when it teeters on the edge of sounding saccharine, especially when it comes to the crystalline piano notes that open up the album’s first track, “Stranded.” European spills over with soundtrack-style flourishes: crisp, cool string arrangements (“Days,” “I Can Try”); triumphant drum rolls (“Forward Is All”); and rollicking piano chords. The album’s standout track, “I Can Try,” sounds, in the best possible way, like something off the soundtrack of a John Hughes movie thanks to its oh-so–’80s instrumentation (wind chimes, synthesized strings, a drum machine, and yes, a saxophone solo). Granted, it’s the kind of approach that risks sounding goofy, but by and large, European strikes a nice balance between genuine and theatrical, shambling and shiny. ~ Margaret Reges, Rovi Performers: Katarina Palm – Cello; Lina Molander – Viola; Per Larsson – Horn, Piano; Daniel Fridlund Brandt – Drums; Kalle von Hall – Percussion; Karin Hagström – Violin; Mattias Glavå – Guitar; Max Sjoholm – Drums; Nadja Janlert – Violin;
