Electric garage heaters … The advantages and disadvantages

If you are looking for a way to search your garage or workshop heat you might want to consider installing an electric garage heater. Electric heaters generally cost more to operate than gas-fired heaters, but there are some excellent advantages of using instead of electric. Here are the advantages and disadvantages.

Pros:

1. Quiet operation. Electric heaters consist of an electric coil heating elements and fan support. The coils do not make noise as they heat on. Are a mainstay behind the fan coil produces only minimal noise as it pushes air through the heated Coils and in the garage or shop space. Gas forced air heaters are basically small stoves, similar to a central furnace used in most households. You are in usually louder, because they have an open flame, the noise and vibration than the gas produced in the burning heat exchanger. This is particularly annoying in attached garages, in which sound waves can vibrate through walls and beams in the living room of the house.

Easy to install. Electric heaters are fairly easy to to install compared to gas heaters, because you do not need to run a gas line or flue. In many homes, more gas pipelines in the garage is not practical or not affordable, so electric makes more sense. However, running electrical energy is usually not a do-it-yourself project will require the services of a licensed electrician. Most vented gas heaters need at least a 4 "smoke outside. Many homeowners fear the task of a hole in the roof or an exterior wall to the Flue gases to be removed. Electric heaters produce no emissions, just clean, quiet warmth, so that the smoke is not required.

Disadvantages:

1. Electricity is usually more expensive than gas in most of North America. If we compare the cost of heating a typical two-car garage, electric heating can be as much as 20% cost to serve more than a vented gas forced-air heating and 40% more than a valve with infrared heater.
2. 240-volt power supply. This is the same power as your oven or electric dryer. You must ensure that sufficient capacity in your house panel, an additional Accommodate 40 or 50 amp circuit breaker. A 7.5 kW electric heater at 240V will draw 1: about 31 amps and will require a 40 amp. A 10.0 kW 240 V, 1 phase Heating about 42 amps draw, a 50 amp circuit. They want the entire amp rating of your panel before buying an electric heater test.

We are often asked: "Can not I just buy a plug-in type electric heater to do the job?"

You can buy, like a heater, but it is not produce nearly enough heat to do the job. A small plug-in 110V electric heating (like you would buy at Walmart or Home Depot) can only produce about 1.5 kw (1500 watts). This corresponds to about 5119 BTU, approximately 20% of the amount by a typical two-car garage heat. At minimum, you must have at least a 5.0 kw (17 065 BTU) Heating, which requires 240, 1 phase power. The most popular garage heaters are sized at 7.5 kW (25 598 BTU) or 10.0 kW (34 130 BTU).

What about costs for the installation?

That's a good question and the answer is different for every situation. Typically, a gas heater to install more expensive because of the cost of running a gas line, 110V power supply and a fireplace. The additional work of the gas line and flue gas can lead to the total installed costs for gas heating as much as 35% higher than an electric heater. Therefore, it may take some time to pay back the cost difference by which energy savings of a gas heater can be compared to a to generate electric heating.

Look at it this way, if you think you are using your heater only occasionally, the ROI (return on investment) of a Gas heating is generated through energy savings alone can take several years. Thus, those who only occasionally their heaters for short periods, excellent candidates for electric heat, while those who, for their warm garages ever want to see in the cold months, much faster returns on gas.
