Once you’ve refinished or replaced your kitchen cabinets, there comes a time to select your cabinet hardware – and you may be looking for a good selection of  discount door knobs. Although this might seem like a simple task, many homeowners are overwhelmed by the incredible variety of options, styles, and finishes.

Let’s face it – you probably never noticed your door knobs until you decided to remodel your home. And now they are an in-your-face important design element, but where to start?

There are basically four categories of doorknobs, each specific to a particular design or purpose. Some are purely aesthetic types, while others are employed for a purpose, such as security. The four types are dummy knobs, keyed entrance knobs, passage knobs, and privacy knobs.

The aptly named dummy knobs are named because they are used only for design and decorative purposes. These types of knobs do not latch or turn – in other words, they are not intended to open a drawer or door. In general, these knobs are found on false doors on wardrobes and cupboards – often side by side. Designers will often use dummy knobs to balance the look of a piece of furniture.

Passage knobs are also known as closet knobs or hall knobs. These are the most common and basic of all the types of knobs and do not lock. These are ideal for playrooms and children’s bedrooms – spaces, in other words, that need to be easily accessible and do not require security.

Keyed entrance knobs are exactly what they sound like – they include a locking mechanism and require a key to open. These are most often found on exterior doors – and are very popular on bedroom and terrace doors. Some homeowners have a series of keyed entrance knobs and have them keyed identically – allowing them to use a single key throughout their home.

Privacy knobs feature a lock only on one side of the door. They do not allow access from the outside, in other words, when they are locked from the inside. They are generally used in rooms that require personal privacy, such as bedrooms, bathrooms, guest rooms, locker rooms, shower rooms, etc.

Besides the above categories, door knobs are available in a wide variety of designs and finishes. In particular, the finish will have a huge impact on your door or cabinet. Consider these common finishes:
